We are happy to announce the Germany Plein Air Workshop in Bavaria and the Alps August 12 - 24, 2024. I would like to invite you to join us for two weeks of plein-air painting in Southern and Northern Bavaria. All experience levels are welcome. Beginners welcome too!

For the last few years I have gone location scouting all throughout Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and have selected some of the most ideal painting locations. We think you will be very inspired as painters and students to study plein air in some of the most beautiful locations throughout this region. Last year my students said it was the best plein air workshop they ever attended!

This is a 13-day outdoor painting workshop with 8 painting locations in all and 3 full demos throughout the course. Towards the end there is a group trip to the historic town of Kirchheim unter Teck to enjoy some authentic homemade German cooking.

Upon arrival in Munich, participants will travel together as a group to the Bavarian Alps town of Füssen. While in Fussen, students will stay in locally owned villas located in the charming countryside with castle and alps views. Fussen is an old-world Bavarian town settled in Roman times and is located on the banks of the Lech River. It became known as the site of the “Hohes Schloss” (High Castle), the former summer residence of the prince-bishops of Augsburg. Below the Hohes Schloss is the Baroque complex of the monastery to Benedictine of St. Mang whose history goes back to the 9th century. The oldest fresco in Germany can be found in this Basilica dating back to the year 980. In the Altstadt (Old Town) there are local bakeries, restaurants, shops, Bier Gardens and steep, red roofs in the typical Bavarian style.

The surrounding Bavarian country side is very beautiful with Rococo Churches, farms and castle views, and provides many opportunities for plein-air painting against the backdrop of the famous Bavarian Alps. Here is home to the historic destination of King Ludwig’s Neuschwanstein Castle.

The second half of the workshop will take place in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Rothenburg is a medieval German town with picturesque lanes, cobblestone streets and is surrounded by a fortification wall built in the 13th century. Students will stay in Rothenburg for the second half of the workshop and travel to nearby painting destinations like Bamberg and Dinkelsbühl, Wolframs-Eschenbach and Nuremberg.

This workshop includes all lodging, all transportation including to and from the airport, a welcome dinner, and a farewell dinner, daily breakfast and 8 full days of plein air painting instruction.

Daily during the workshop James will provide one-on-one instruction and do several demos throughout the course showing you how he would handle the scene. James will guide students in how to select for a strong composition, identify problems and edit key issues during the painting process. James gives a description of how he sets up his palette, achieve color harmony, and where his focus is drawn and how to compose the many elements of a scene. James will work with each artist individually according to their experience level. This workshop is meant to help you push forward on your painting journey. Artists complete anywhere from 12-16 works on average during the two week duration. All skill levels are welcome, friend or family also welcome. We look forward to sharing in this curated experience with you!
